It was the Maya Indians, ancient people form Central America, who discovered the secret of cocoa. They mixed cocoa beans with water and spices, which made a tasty chocolate drink. It was a luxurious product, so they drank it only on special occasions.
In the 15th century, Christopher Columbs brought cocoa beans from South America to Spain. The Spanish were then the first Europeans to prepare a chocolate drink. They kept it secret, so other European nations did not know the taste of chocolate for the next two hundred years.
Yet, chocolate was only known as a drink then. A bar of milk chocolate was first procuced after many years of experiments in the 19th century in Switzerland. Now the Swiss make perhaps the best milk chocolate in the worls and they also hold the world record - they eat more than ten kilos of chocolate per person a year!
