Stonehenge is a circle of large standing stones on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. It was built in prehistoric times.
Work on the stone circle began in about 3100BC.
About a century later, the large circle of stones around a smaller semi-circle was added. These stones are 9 m long aand weigh 50 tons.
It is not known exactly why Stonehenge was built, but it is thought that the builders were sun worshippers. What is surprising about Stonehenge is the fact that some of the stones were brought from as far as 385 km away! Today, thousands of tourists travel to see Stonehenge.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is in the Black Hills of South Dakota USA. It is an enermous sculpture carved in granite on the side of Mount Rushmore.
It was carved by the American sculptor, Gutzon Borglum. It was started in 1927 and completed in 1941.
