The name "Gunguro" comes from the Japanese for "black face" because their faces are brown from hours in the tanninge salon. They spend a lot of money on make- up. This season they are wearing blue or white lipstick and white make-up round their eyes. They look like clowns. Their clothes are a mix of 1970 s Hawaiian surf- style and anything bright and cheap. They want to look shocking. Aya Tashita, is a typical 15- year- old Gunguro. Today she's wearing an orange blouse, a yellow and white checked skirt and an orange purse round her neck. Her lip is pierced. “My father doesn’t like the way I look, but all my friends think I look great. Tonight we’re going to a karaoke party and lots of people are going to be there. We like people to notice us and freak out a bit.’ As well as special shops, Gunguros have their own magazines and they are often in the news. The newspapers say that they are like aliens from outer space. But the girls don’t seem to care.
