Before the days of TV, computers, hi-fis and video games, children usually played outside. Street games were very common then, and of course, very cheap. Most of the time, all you needed was a clear space, a piece of chalk and a bottle cap! A very popular game was marbles. Marbles are small glass balls, usually in a variety of colours. Children spent hours playing marbles in the streets and were very proud of their marble collection. Another popular game, especially for girls, was hopscotch. This is a hopping game. You play on a 'board' which you draw on the street with chalk. Stickball was also a favourite with children - all you need is a broom handle, a rubber ball and a lot of energy! And don't forget skully, one of the most popular games in the streets of New York and still played today. In this game you use bottle caps, or any other small object. Want to try something new? Get your chalk grab a bottle cap and head for the streets!
