The 2010 earthquake in Haiti had a big impact socially; on the locals. Young
children would literally see their families and friends get killed before their eyes,
getting squashed, hit and killed by the collapsing buildings. The exact number of
deaths caused by the earthquake is unknown but estimated 230,000 died.
However, there were survivors even after many days after the earthquake hit,
in the ruble and collapsed buildings. However, it was hard to rescue people
though, as Haiti is very poor and rescue had to come from different countries in
the world. After the rescue came the dead had to be buried in mass burials as
the bodies quickly become infected and full of bacteria which can cause illness
like cholera, when the bacteria gets into water. Rescuers had to bury the dead
like this because they had to save the lives of people that were still alive. The
whole earthquake had a huge impact on people’s lives but mental health
especially because seeing people getting killed and then streets full of dead
bodies is certainly horrific, especially for young children, which can cause a live
long trauma.

After the earthquake has stopped, there were at least 52 aftershocks. An
aftershock is a smaller earthquake after the big one, it does not leave as much
damage but if happens a lot then it will cause even more damage. However, in
Haiti there were much more than a few, therefore, it has caused even more of a
disaster. The earthquake had a huge impact environmentally, for example
around 40% of buildings fell and turned to waste, damaged oil storage tanks
spilled and dead people decaying everywhere. All this has caused a lot of
damage to the environment, and it will take a long time to clear all of the
hazardous things to the environment and humans. Even before the quake Haiti
had major environmental problems. Intensive logging beginning in the 1950's
reduced Haiti’s forest cover from 60 percent to less than 2 percent today. This
lack of trees causes huge soil erosion problems, threatening both food and clean
water sources for many hungry and thirsty people.

Haiti was, and still is one of the poorest countries in the world and and the
Americas. The economy is one of the worst too. Haiti mostly depends on
agriculture sector; citizens do jobs like farming, etc. However, because the
economy is very low, the government does not have the money to build
buildings that withstand natural disasters, therefore natural disasters (eg. an
Earthquake) keep destroying the farms and making the economy even worse.
In addition, this also effects citizens as they do not get paid, they have no
money to provide for their families, making them live in poverty. After the
earthquake, there were needed billions to clean up the streets, rebuild buildings
and housing etc., which Haiti does not have the money for. Therefore, countries
around the world tried to help raising charity’s and celebrities helping how they
could, to somehow rebuild people’s lives. There are still millions of dollars to
come from different countries around the world, to rebuild the essentials like
hospitals, schools and housing.
