The Power of Music
'Don't come near us. If yoy do, you'll be sorry.' Two rival gangs are facing each other with knives at opposite ends of a parking lot in the town of Lowell, Massachusetts, Usa. One gang is Cambodian, the other is Afro-Caribbean. Accordin to Arn Chorn Pond, a human rights worker who lives there, gang fighting is quite common.
Arn knows about violence. He grew up in Cambodia in south-east Asia and lost all his family at the age of fifteen in the Cambodian civil war at the end of the 1970s. He now lives and works in Lowell , where many Cambodian refugees and their families also live.
Arn hates street violence and wants to stop it. He has noticed one thing which brings together the rival gangs, and that is dance music. 'If they like the music, they will dance happily together,' he says.
'They won't play sports together but they will dance.'
Not long ago he collected some recording equipment and started a small recording studio. 'This way the gangs can make hip-hop CDs together,' aid Arn. 'If they can learn how to work creatively, they won't want to fight each other.'
Now, three months later the street gangs are making their first CD and are learning to live peacefully together. Thongs are slowly getting better.
