Chicken farming today: battery farms

Battery farms are a controversial feature of modern farming in the UK. Farmers keep the hens* in very small cages or 'batteries'. These cages are so small that the hens can't flap their wings or clean their feathers. Usually there are about five hens in each cage and farmers put five or six cages on top of each other. In this way, they can fit a lot of chickens in a very small space.
